How To Remove The Water Pump In A 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

The Chevrolet Silverado 2001 base model came with a six cylinder 4.3 liter and a five speed manual transmission engine. The water pump is mounted on the front of the engine, just below the intake manifold. Propeller water pump is driven by the crankshaft through the serpentine belt and is also responsible for providing rotational power for the engine cooling fan. The No. 1, working against your engine is the heat accumulated by the friction and combustion, it is imperative to replace a defective water pump before driving the vehicle until a short distance.

Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage parking brake. Lift the hood of the vehicle and support with the hood support rod (if equipped). Allow engine to cool completely before proceeding.

Lift the front of the truck in the air Jack. Place the Jack under the front frame of the truck Rails and lower the cat until the truck is firmly based on the cat. Loosen the refrigerant pressure Cap a quarter turn to relieve pressure in the cooling system. Once the pressure is completely relieved, remove coolant pressure Cap.

Place the drain pan in the right side of the radiator. Loosen the radiator drain valve until coolant begins to pour from the radiator drain valve. Once the coolant runs out, tighten the radiator drain cock. Remove the drain pan and store it in a safe place for later disposal.

Place the second drain pan on the rear side of the engine toward the wheel on the side of driver´s. remove the drain plug on the left of refrigerant with the hex bit and ratchet. Once the coolant has drained, remove the drain plug coolant suitable with the hex bit and Ratchet and the rest of the coolant to drain. Both coolant drain plugs are about six inches below the cylinder head, in the side of the block, about mid-center of the rear cylinders.

Clean the threads of the drain plugs of the coolant with the wire brush and apply a thin layer of thread to each plug. Install the coolant drain plug on the engine block and tighten to 15 foot-pounds with the hex bit and torque. Remove the drain pan and store it in a safe place.

Disconnect the PCV hose in the air intake tube. Loosen the air intake tube clamp to the flow meter with the screwdriver. Remove the nut that holds the resonator of air to the throttle body intake. Tilt the resonator of air toward the front of the engine and remove the air intake resonator and air inlet pipe.

Remove the bolts that secure the cover of the top fan base cover and radiator lower fan support with socket and ratchet. Lift fan engine Bay cover.

Place the tool of exploitation of fan clutch on the water pump pulley bolt heads. Place the wrench on the fan clutch fan clutch. Turn the nut to the right fan clutch using the tool fan clutch to prevent rotation of the water pump pulley. Remove the fan and clutch the engine compartment fan.

Draw a sketch of the routing of the belt with a pencil and paper. Place the head of ratchet 3/8 inch square opening in the belt tensioner and rotate the tensioner counterclockwise to relieve the tension of the belt. Slide the strap around the tensioner pulley and slowly release the tensioner to its natural position. Remove the serpentine belt from the crankshaft and engine accessories.

Place the hose of short cooling bypass, curved above the water pump. Each of the jaws clamp with pliers and slide them into the middle of the hose. Remove the bypass of cooling hose. The radiator to water pump hose clamp and slide the radiator hose clamp. Remove the water pump radiator hose.

Place the tool of exploitation of fan clutch on the water pump pulley bolts. Loosen screws opposite with socket and ratchet; maintain pressure on the tool fan clutch to prevent rotation of the pulley. Place the tool of exploitation in the loose bolts and keep the pressure upon the tool of exploitation while that loosen the opposite pulley bolts. Remove all screws of the pulley four and remove the water pump pulley.

Remove the four water pump mounting bolts and remove the pump from the engine water. Remove water pump gaskets and clean the mating surface on the engine with the wire brush.

Clean the water pump, screws with wire brush and apply a thin layer of thread sealer to the pins. Install the new water pump and the pump to the motor of water seals. Tighten the mounting bolt to 33 foot-pounds of torque.

Install the pulley of water pump of new water pump. Tighten the pulley bolts to 18 foot-pounds exploitation tool torque key and clutch fan. Install refrigeration bypass hose and Stirrups of pressure on each end of the hose. Install the radiator to water pump hose and slide the pressure clamp in place.

Inspect for cracks, wear or satin serpentine belt and replace them if necessary. Route serpentine around according to the sketch engine accessories belt previously. Turn the tensioner counterclockwise and slide the strap around the tensioner pulley. Slowly release the tensioner to apply tension to the belt.

Screw the fan and the fan clutch on the drive shaft of water pump in rotation to the left. Place the head of the torque wrench in the square hole in the fan clutch wrench and tighten the fan clutch to 41 foot pounds.

Install the upper fan cover and tighten its retention with a ratchet and socket. Align the hinge of resonator of air intake under the edge in the throttle body and tilt the resonator back. Install nut of the resonator. Install the air inlet on the MAF sensor tube. Install the PCV tube on the intake tube.

Pour fresh coolant Dex-Cool of 50-50 in the surge tank until it stabilizes the level of coolant in the tank and the level is above the fracture in the tank. Start the engine and let it idle for a minute. Fill the tank of the surge to the fracture line.

Loosely install the pressure Cap (for which the system cannot create pressure) and increase the speed of the engine at 3000 RPM for 30 seconds and drop to idle. Further increase the speed of the engine and release the speed at idle at 30 second intervals until the engine reaches its normal operating temperature and the thermostat opens.

Remove the pressure CAP and fill the tank of the wave for all hot. Install coolant pressure CAP and turn the engine off.

Lower the truck to the ground and take the used coolant to a store for the elimination.

Silverado´s motor holds 3.15 to 3.22 gallons of coolant. The exact amount needed to fill the Silverado´s system may vary.

While the engine is hot, do not open the refrigerant pressure Cap.

DEX-Cool is not compatible with any other refrigerant.
